Area was established in 1969 as a bulletin for The Institute of British Geographers, and has evolved into a full academic journal of the Royal Geographic Society (with the IBG). Area publishes the very best of geographical research and scholarship on all aspects of human and physical geography. Its particular emphasis is on providing:
-
a debating forum for the latest geographical research and ideas
-
an outlet for fresh ideas, from both established and new scholars
-
rapid publication
-
access to new researchers, including postgraduate students and academics at an early stage in their careers
-
commentaries and debates that focus on topical issues, new research results, methodological theory and practice and academic discussion and debate.
Area features regular special sections on topics of interest hosted by Guest Editors. It has a popular Book Review section and awards the annual Area Prize for New Research in Geography.
