Area was established in 1969 as a bulletin for The Institute of British Geographers, and has evolved into a full academic journal of the Royal Geographic Society (with the IBG) with an emphasis on publishing the latest geographical research and ideas from postgraduates through to established academics.
Area features regular special sections on topics of interest hosted by Guest Editors. It has a popular Book Review section and awards the annual Area Prize for New Research in Geography for the best paper by an early career researcher.
